Omar A. Jackson, CHST, STS-C
With over 15 years of experience, Omar A. Jackson is a consummate environmental, health & safety professional and has played a critical role in the success of the safety for past companies he has worked for.
As the newly appointed Director of Environmental, Health & Safety (NY/NJ/CA) for JRM Construction Management, LLC, he will be responsible for identifying and achieving departmental goals and objectives; managing and supervising the performance and effectiveness of management team(s); managing effective relationships; servicing contracts specific to project site safety, and communications with internal and external business partners and stakeholders; serving as the key technical contributor and providing leadership for corporate initiatives requiring construction industry safety and health information and resources; sustaining loss control and risk management knowledge and expertise; and working closely with JRM’s safety training, insurance, legal and workers’ compensation services.
Omar has the ability to devise, implement, monitor, and improve upon complex safety plans designed to eliminate or reduce risk and associated risk expenses. Certified as an OSHA Authorized Outreach Construction Trainer by the United States Department of Labor of OSHA, Omar is able to conduct 10-hour and 30-hour OSHA training classes.
He also works closely with our subcontractors to develop and enforce their own safety programs. Omar will ensure that all safety/health/environmental laws, codes, and regulations are followed by conducting onsite spot inspections and working closely with the full-time onsite project superintendents of JRM. By visiting the jobsites regularly to verify that it is organized, clean, and secure, he will help the project team(s) to build efficiently and professionally with quality and safety at the forefront, in order eliminate existing, potential and unforeseen unsafe working conditions.
In his past, he has worked primarily in the construction industry but also in other industries such as underground tunneling operations, healthcare institutions, major rail transportation, mailroom shipping/receiving, heavy civil construction, manufacturing facilities, and pharmaceutical laboratory services.
As the former Area Safety Manager for Shawmut Design and Construction covering the Tri-State Area (NY/NJ) and the Mid-Atlantic Region (PA/DC/MD/VA), he was responsible for promoting and driving a culture of safety everywhere Shawmut functioned by using effective policies, procedures, requirements, rules, standards, and regulations to enhance Shawmut’s overall safety program including the safety programs of our subcontractors. The best approach that has been proven so far in promoting safety has been the marriage of both compliance and culture where leadership continues to engage one of the most important elements of construction and how we build, which are the people that build with quality and distinction.
Omar has applied such strategy by identifying the high-risk work early on with the various project teams of Shawmut by analyzing drawings to examine preventative methods by design, and partnering with Shawmut’s subcontractors to pre-plan such high-risk work in order target zero incidents and avoid unsafe working conditions and behaviors.
Omar holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Health & Safety Engineering (ABET Accredited program) from the Pennsylvania State University, currently serves as the President of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) New York City (NYC) Chapter and is the Executive Secretary for the Construction Practice Specialty (CPS) with a current membership with the Safety Executives of New York, Inc. (SENY).
Omar is certified as a Construction Site Fire Safety Manager (CSFSM) designated by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).
Mr. Jackson is also certified as a Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), a Safety Trained Supervisor in Construction (STSC), and a Safety Management Specialist (SMS), all of which are accredited by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
